Since we’ve been so busy at work lately, I’ve been looking at the various types of hdmi cables and their differences. I’ve discovered that there are three different categories of hdmi cables: unshielded, 3.5mm, and high-definition. These terms are not the most intuitive to understand, but they are helpful when it comes to determining what HDMI cables are best for your project.
The unshielded cables are probably the easiest to use. The unshielded cables have a wire that runs right next to the HDMI cable. This makes it easy to plug into your computer with a cable and plug into an HDMI port on your monitor. Although, you can plug a unshielded cable into a HDMI port on a monitor and it will still work.
This unshielded cable is probably the most common type, but it’s not the most user friendly. You can’t just plug an HDMI cable into any monitor that has a HDMI port. You need to use an HDMI cable with a shield and plug the shield into your monitor. You can plug this into a monitor that doesn’t have an HDMI port and you will not be able to see the image on your monitor.
The problem is that most monitors have HDMI connectors. HDMI cables, on the other hand, are all shielded. You can only use shielded HDMI cables on monitors that are HDMI compatible. So if you have a monitor that is not HDMI compatible, you can’t use a unshielded HDMI cable.
Thunderbolt is a newer technology that is backwards compatible with older monitors, which means that you can use a unshielded HDMI cable on every monitor that has a Thunderbolt port. You only need a Thunderbolt port if you have a monitor that is HDMI compatible. The other problem is that most monitors only have one Thunderbolt port, which means that you need to buy a separate cable for each monitor. This can be a bit expensive.
I think it would be really cool if each monitor had a different thunderbolt port. Then you could connect any two or more monitors with just a single cable. I’d love to see a monitor that has two thunderbolt ports, one for each monitor. That would be truly amazing.
Not only does thunderbolt have a huge advantage in monitor design, it is also a very cost-effective way of adding Thunderbolt ports to monitors. If you have a monitor that has both a Thunderbolt port and a DisplayPort port, you can combine the two by putting the Thunderbolt port on the monitor’s back side.
I have a nice-looking monitor that has a Thunderbolt port on the back and a DisplayPort port on the front. I use the DisplayPort port for video output, and the Thunderbolt port for Thunderbolt-capable devices.
This monitor comes from KVM, which has a great selection of monitors to choose from. It’s also not an inexpensive monitor though… but that’s the tradeoff for an extra Thunderbolt port.
Thunderbolt is a bit of a weird name, but it is becoming one of the better known display technologies. I have a Thunderbolt monitor from KVM for my wife and I, and we use it in our home. Its a great solution for connecting two PCs to a TV or monitor with HDMI and DisplayPort ports. Our monitor has a Thunderbolt port on the back, and a DisplayPort port on the front.
